Biblical Doctrine

The Doctrine of Salvation

What Scripture truly teaches about salvation, eternal security, and why the gift of God cannot be lost.

Introduction

It has often been preached that "once saved, always saved" is a lie from the Devil โ€” that should a Christian backslide or sin without repentance, hell will be his everlasting home. The problem is that this is not what Scripture teaches, nor is it what the Apostle Paul preached.

The Scriptures were written primarily to teach doctrine (2 Tim. 3:16). The very first purpose God had in writing the Bible was to teach sound doctrine. And in the last days, Paul warned, people will not endure sound doctrine but heap to themselves teachers with itching ears (2 Tim. 4:3โ€“4).

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

The Meaning of Salvation

The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation carry the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel โ€” gathering into itself all redemptive acts and processes:

  • Justification and Redemption
  • Grace and Propitiation
  • Imputation and Forgiveness
  • Sanctification and Glorification

Salvation is by grace through faith. It is a free gift, wholly without works (Rom. 3:27โ€“28; 4:1โ€“8; 6:23; Eph. 2:8). The divine order is: first salvation, then works (Eph. 2:9โ€“10; Titus 3:5โ€“8).

The Three Tenses of Salvation

TenseWhat It MeansKey References
Past โ€” Has Been SavedSaved from the guilt and penalty of sin. The Christian is safe.Luke 7:50; 1 Cor. 1:18; Eph. 2:5โ€“8
Present โ€” Being SavedSaved from the habit and dominion of sin through sanctification.Rom. 6:14; 8:2; 2 Cor. 3:18; Phil. 2:12โ€“13
Future โ€” Will Be SavedSaved at the Lord's return from all bodily infirmities, brought into full conformity to Christ.Rom. 8:18โ€“23; 1 Cor. 15:42โ€“44; 1 Pet. 1:5

How to Believe the Gospel

A person becomes born again when he believes the Gospel (1 Cor. 15:1โ€“4). In Romans 10:9โ€“10, Paul explains: confess Jesus Christ as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Head belief is knowing about Christ; heart belief is trusting in Christ โ€” relying on Him to keep you out of hell.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9

Key Truth

The resurrection makes the atonement effectual. "If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins" (1 Cor. 15:17). Without the resurrection, there is no salvation.

Repentance Before and After Salvation

Repentance before salvation is a turning from a state of being โ€” from sinner under God's wrath to child of God. Repentance after salvation is different. Once saved, you are no longer a sinner โ€” you are a saint who commits sin. You repent not to receive Christ again, but to restore fellowship with Him (1 John 1:9; Eph. 4:25โ€“26).

Therefore, 1 John 1:9 has nothing to do with the act of getting saved. To become a child of God you confess the Lord Jesus โ€” not your sins โ€” and believe in His resurrection (Rom. 10:9โ€“10).

Salvation Cannot Be Lost

Salvation cannot be lost. Period. Romans 11:29 declares that the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable (see also Rom. 5:15โ€“19; 11:6). The Holy Spirit seal given at the moment of belief (Eph. 1:13) signifies a finished transaction, ownership, and security โ€” not broken by sin, doubt, or failure.

  • "Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." โ€” Ephesians 4:30
  • "I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish; neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." โ€” John 10:28
  • "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." โ€” John 6:37
  • "For by grace ye are saved through faithโ€ฆ it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast." โ€” Ephesians 2:8โ€“9
  • "These things have I written unto youโ€ฆ that ye may know that ye have eternal life." โ€” 1 John 5:13

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

2 Timothy 2:13

The Crux

Salvation cannot be lost because it is not yours โ€” it is His. Satan promotes doubt about salvation to make the Christian ineffective. The more you doubt your salvation, the less of a threat you are to him.

Commonly Misused Verses

A text taken out of context is a pretext. Here are the most commonly misused passages:

Philippians 2:12 โ€” "Work out your salvation"

Paul immediately adds "for it is God which worketh in you" (Phil. 2:13). The believer is to "work out" โ€” not "work at" โ€” what God has already placed within. This is sanctification, not the securing of salvation.

Hebrews 6:4โ€“6 โ€” "Fall away"

This is a warning to those who have been enlightened and tasted but never committed to Christ. The Greek for "enlightened" (photizo) means metaphorical illumination; "tasted" (geuomai) means a foretaste โ€” not full reception. The word "better" in verse 9 makes clear: if verses 1โ€“5 described salvation, there could be nothing better.

Matthew 24:13 โ€” "Endure unto the end"

This is set in the Great Tribulation context โ€” not the Church Age. The audience is Jews in Palestine observing Old Testament Law and awaiting the Second Coming. It has no bearing on any New Testament Christian's salvation. The very next verse (24:14) defines "the end" as the close of a period of preaching โ€” not an individual's death.

Matthew 7:21โ€“23 โ€” "I never knew you"

The words "I never knew you" eliminate any thought of born-again Christians being in view. Christ knows His own intimately (John 10:14โ€“27). The prophets here are self-called and self-deceived (cf. Jer. 14:4).

Where Do Works Fit In?

Works come after salvation โ€” they are the fruit, not the root. At the Judgment Seat of Christ, every believer's work is tried by fire (1 Cor. 3:12โ€“14):

  • Gold โ€” Worshipping and magnifying Christ as God.
  • Silver โ€” Telling others how to be saved; the price of redemption.
  • Precious Stones โ€” The souls won to Christ (Mal. 3:17โ€“18; Zech. 9:16; 1 Pet. 2:5).

Works do not determine whether you enter heaven โ€” they determine how you rule with Christ in His Millennial Kingdom. Christians who neglect these works arrive in heaven "dead broke" at the Judgment Seat. They are saved, but their works did not endure the fire.

The Five Crowns

Rewards for faithful works are given as crowns at the Judgment Seat of Christ:

Crown 1

Crown of Righteousness

2 Timothy 4:1โ€“8

For eagerly awaiting and loving the appearing of Christ โ€” the Rapture.

Crown 2

Crown of Life

James 1:12; Revelation 2:10

For enduring temptation and remaining faithful under trial.

Crown 3

Incorruptible Crown

1 Corinthians 9:24โ€“27

For disciplining oneself and not yielding to the flesh.

Crown 4

Crown of Glory

1 Peter 5:1โ€“4

For faithfully giving out the Word of God.

Crown 5

Crown of Rejoicing

1 Thessalonians 2:19โ€“20

The soul winner's crown โ€” for witnessing and leading others to Christ.

Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Revelation 3:11

The Final Question

Would You Like to Know How to Be Saved?

Where will you spend eternity?

The Bible presents only two eternal destinations: living with God in a perfect universe forever (Heaven), or burning with Satan in fire and brimstone forever (Hell). Since no human being can make himself holy by his own works (Titus 3:5), God offers His own Righteousness โ€” contained in Jesus Christ, who went to the Cross to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor. 5:21).

Neither your church membership, your baptism, nor your good works can save you. You must trust Jesus Christ alone, by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8โ€“9). Wherever you are, bow your head and pray:

Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner, and unless you save me, I am lost forever. I now come to you, the best way I know how, and ask you to save me. I receive you as my Savior and trust you to forgive and justify me, and present me without fault before God's throne in the day of Judgment.

If you have done this, you have made the greatest decision of your life. "Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed" (Romans 10:11). God has given you a brand new life (2 Corinthians 5:17). Live it for Him.
